Paid Internship Involving Horses: Hansen Dam Riding School

Hansen Dam Riding School, owned by Larry Langer and Langer Equestrian Group, is offering a one year paid internship. This position is ideal for someone interested in working in the horse industry. The internship will offer structured guidance for developing skills necessary for teaching, working in a show barn, and managing a barn, along with basic business and marketing skills. This is a full time position that offers a monthly stipend and regular riding lessons. Additional items that may be included are board for an owned horse, housing, and transportation. Full Time

· Tuesday - Sunday

· Limited schedule flexibility

Basic skills and experience:

· Knowledge of horses and horse industry

· Strong riding skills in hunter/jumper or dressage discipline. Show ring experience is not necessary.

· Strong people skills and likes interacting with people in person, telephone, and e-mail.

· Basic computer skills, especially Word, Excel, and internet based activities.

· Communication skills, both verbal and written.


The successful person will:

· Be passionate about horses, teaching, riding, training, and learning management skills for working in the horse industry.

· Take responsibility for personal actions as well as contributing to the Team.

· Embrace the challenges and rewards of working for a small, growing horse business.

· See education as a lifelong process and seek to learn and grow as a person and in one’s career.

Interns will develop skills and experience in all aspects of running a riding school business, including:

· Teaching students of many different abilities and ages.

· Managing riding school horses, including schooling and horse selection.

· Barn management, including horse and staff scheduling, supervisory skills, inventory, tack and supplies, safety protocols, horse care and more.

· Following an established teaching curriculum and contributing to curriculum developments.

· Administration, such as interacting with clients and the general public, lesson schedules, and record keeping.

· Developing and running week long horse oriented day camp programs.

· Financial skills, including tracking payments, understanding a Profit & Loss statement, financial analysis as it pertains to the business’ operation.

· Marketing and publicity, including different marketing strategies, social media, monthly newsletter, photos, and more.

· Special events, including HDRS specific events such as play days, open house, lectures, and special clinicians. Interns will also be involved with various community events and outreach activities.

· Develop public speaking skills, and effective communication with individuals and small groups of different ages and interest levels.

At the conclusion of a successful one year internship with HDRS, qualified interns will be given first consideration for job openings in HDRS. Additionally, interns will be given assistance finding jobs in the horse industry.
