      Introduction
Welcome to Manawatu RDA, an affiliate of New Zealand Riding for the Disabled Association, along with over 50 other organisations around Aotearoa.

We are all registered charities meaning that there are taxation benefits when donating to us. There is donation information below.

The kaupapa of the RDA involves providing goal-based riding activities that increase the ability, strength and confidence of people with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.  [By way of clarification, disability in this context includes any special needs, not just physical disability.]

Our focus is to make a positive difference. Our vision is to reach more riders and change more lives. To do this effectively and sustainably, we need community support on multiple levels.

      About Manawatu RDA
      What we do
Riding for the Disabled provides therapeutic interaction with horses in order to develop increased ability and self esteem for children and adults with physical and intellectual difficulties.

We use horses as our therapists.

Our riding programs are designed to help develop and increase physical abilities, communication, concentration, social skills, confidence and self esteem.
Each class is tailored to the rider's needs and goals.

Riding for the Disabled is a national organisation with over 50 branches. We are affiliated to NZ RDA and we complete a comprehensive annual Operational Review. We also hire our covered arena to the public to help cover some costs. We are primarily run by a large group of volunteers and we employ staff to do the general caring for the property & our ponies.

In common with all organisations having anything to do with children, all our volunteers and staff are required to have a clear police check.

For information about our programmes, see our rider information.

Our history
While the first Constitution was registered in July 1981, informal riding activities had started prior to that. The first formal sessions were held at the Awapuni Racecourse in Palmerston North.

After two or three other venues, the horses moved to David and Margaret Bowler's home opposite Taonui Airfield in around 1993 where they had an arena for their own family. Soon afterwards they built a shed to be able to shelter from the rain.

The land on Awahuri Feilding Road was purchased in 1997 with some infrastructure and an outdoor arena completed the following year.

The building of the indoor arena began in 2003, with no covered sides initially. The building was completely enclosed by 2005, with inside lighting. The covered yards for the horses were built in 2007 followed a couple of years later by the Administration block. 2012 saw the completion of the hayshed behind the arena building.

In 2013, Manawatu RDA celebrated 40 years of existence and freehold ownership of its property and facilities, thanks to community support over the years and the tenacious leadership of Margaret Bowler, ably supported by husband David and a dedicated team of volunteers.

Where we are located
We have an indoor arena and land for the ponies at 248 Awahuri Feilding Road, on the outskirts of Feilding.

      About becoming a rider
      Equine assisted therapy and rehabilitation
The movement of the horse is used as a treatment tool by physical and occupational therapists to address impairment in individual clients. The therapy horse is a warm, flexible and responsive animal who is friendly and undemanding. Its walk action corresponds to the physiology of the human walk.

Adjustments by a rider's body to these rhythms while striving to maintain balance alternately activates and relaxes the muscles, particularly those of the trunk, spine, hips and pelvis. The horses' movement is used in specialised techniques such as hippotherapy.

Our Riders attend RDA to achieve a specific goal, that is set out at the time of enrolment..

Riding develops, improves and promotes Balance and co-ordination, Posture and muscle tone, Concentration, Self-discipline and self-esteem, Perception and spatial awareness, Communication and social skills, Independence, Encourages decision making, The stimulation of learning skills, Behaviour modification, Recreational and sport riding, Social contact and trust  with peers.

Without the help of volunteers Manawatu RDA would be unable to operate. No matter what your age and background there could be a role for you with us as a volunteer.

Volunteering with RDA is fun, rewarding and confidence building. Our volunteers assist with the delivery of our equestrian therapy programmes.  We also have a need for assistance around the facility and with the horses as well as a variety of administrative tasks.

The question is why pick us to give your time too?

We will give you a genuine volunteer experience, your time with Manawatu RDA will be a worthwhile time investment. When you see the benefits the riders get from their involvement in our sessions you will understand the kaupapa of Riding for the Disabled and that will be the reward for your involvement.

The work is interesting, varied, challenging and rewarding.

If you'd like to become a volunteer or would like more information, click on the Inquiry form link below.

      About becoming a member
Under its legal structure, Manawatu RDA has paying members who ultimately control the entity by way of electing a committee to run the organisation.  Numbers are important and assist applications for grants and sponsorship. Annual membership is $15 and for arena users, members get a $5 discount per session.

      About donating
The services Manawatu RDA provides to its riders is undertaken totally by volunteers.  For each riding session there is a coach, a person coordinating riders and their caregivers as they arrive and up to three people per rider - the person leading the horse and up to two side-walkers depending on the individual rider's ability and needs.

There are considerable costs associated with the care and wellbeing of the horses, the operation and maintenance of the facilities and ensuring all those involved are up to date with policies, processes and training.

For these reasons, we are always on the look-out for donations.

It is simple to make a donation, click on Make a donate link below to see the options.

Manawatu RDA is a registered charity therefore any donations qualify for a tax credit.

     Members and Volunteers sought
RDA riding activities are human resource heavy with some riders needing three volunteers, one leading with up to two side-walkers.  Each session also needs a coach and someone marshalling riders and caregivers as they arrive.  That means a session with 4 riders could require as many as 14 volunteers or a minimum of ten.

On the admin side, there is a huge amount involved with health and safety, privacy issues, rider records, finances, fund raising, communications and all the other stuff around running an operation involving people and animals.  The latter need attention twice every day, 365 days of the year!

We are therefore looking for new members who, while not particularly horsey, have experience and time they would be willing to share for this very good cause.  There is plenty to do without any horse interactions!
