Joining RDA Bairnsdale

Joining the Program

We consider applications from any riders with a disability from 3 years of age who have obtained medical consent to participate, with a general weight limit of 80kg.  Riding sessions are varied to offer enjoyment and interest while aiming for riders to learn riding skills to the best of their ability, and progress to independent riding where possible.  We have thirty-minute riding sessions which include trail riding, obstacle courses, games and dressage.  We focus on riding position, posture and communication, and encourage riders to compete in RDAV video dressage competitions and local gymkhanas.  We provide safety helmets and boots.

  • Lesson Fees: $5 per week (currently subsidised by Bairnsdale RSL Women’s Auxiliary)
  • Length of lessons: 30 Minutes
  • Weight restrictions: 80 kg and above
  • Waiting list: No waiting list

Volunteering

All new volunteers receive a Volunteer Information Booklet, a brief induction session and basic program training before being placed with an experienced mentor.  Many of our volunteers have been coming for many years as the experience is so rewarding and we have such fun and form great friendships.  We need a big team to operate and there are many tasks to suit different people:

  • Meeting & greeting riders
  • Assisting riders with helmets
  • Brushing and tacking up horses
  • Leading horses
  • Side-walking with riders
  • Setting up equipment
  • Setting up morning tea
  • Helping in riding programs and competitions
  • Fundraising events and community displays
