Arabian Racing in Australia History

Understanding the difficulties of developing an Arabian Racing industry in Australia is very complex. Racing Australia, established in 2015, is the peak national administration body for Thoroughbred racing in Australia. The statutory bodies for racing in each State or Territory, known as the Principal Racing Authorities, set up the Australian Racing Board, renamed to Racing Australia,  by consensual agreement. This consensus by the States is achieved by agreeing to abide by and enforce the Australian Rules of Racing, which are within the authority of the ARB.

The Principal Racing Authorities in each State or Territory are approved by the relevant State Governments under their legislation. The Principal Clubs have control over all registered racetracks.  For Arabian Racing to be permitted in any State or Territory, permission must be obtained from the Principal Racing Authority in that State. Wagering on Arabian Racing is determined by the State Government Legislation in each State.
